Abstract
Drug dictionaries and coding systems are essential tools in pharmacovigilance, facilitating the standardized recording, reporting, and analysis of drug-related information. These systems, such as the WHO Drug Dictionary and MedDRA (Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities), provide a common language for describing medications, adverse events, and medical conditions across different regulatory environments and healthcare settings. Drug dictionaries include comprehensive information on drug names, active ingredients, therapeutic classes, and dosing forms, allowing consistent identification of medications worldwide. Coding in pharmacovigilance involves assigning specific codes to drugs, adverse events, and other medical data, enabling efficient data management, signal detection, and regulatory reporting. These codes ensure accuracy in documenting and sharing information related to drug safety, supporting global efforts to monitor and mitigate adverse drug reactions. The use of standardized dictionaries and coding systems is crucial for enhancing communication, improving data quality, and facilitating the effective management of drug safety information in pharmacovigilance.
