The study of history has long been dominated by narratives centered on political events, dynasties, and male figures. However, a more inclusive and nuanced understanding of our past necessitates the acknowledgement and analysis of women’s experiences, contributions, and struggles across different eras. This book, “Women in Indian History: Context, Contributions, and Challenges”, seeks to bridge that gap by placing women at the heart of historical inquiry.

Structured in accordance with the curriculum of the Bachelor of Arts – History (Semester VII) under the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) 2024–2028, this volume presents a comprehensive overview of women’s roles in shaping Indian society from ancient to modern times. The chapters have been designed to facilitate critical engagement with diverse sources, ranging from Vedic texts and religious scriptures to non-archival oral traditions and feminist historiography.

The first section introduces key trends and theoretical frameworks in women’s studies, offering liberal and Marxist perspectives along with indigenous insights. Subsequent chapters torch’s into the evolving socio-religious status of women during the Vedic, Buddhist, Islamic, and Sikh periods, as well as their roles in spiritual movements such as Bhakti and Sufism. The colonial era is analyzed through the lens of education reforms, resistance movements, and women-led organizations, while the final section explores women’s political participation, social reforms, and contemporary issues in the post-independence period.

This book emphasizes not only historical facts but also promotes reflective thinking and encourages students to draw connections between past struggles and present-day gender issues. It aims to foster awareness, appreciation, and a sense of responsibility among students to contribute towards an equitable and inclusive society.
