The thymus, located in the upper chest behind the sternum, plays a critical role in the immune system, particularly during early life. It produces thymosin, a hormone essential for the development and maturation of T-cells, which are crucial for adaptive immunity. As individuals age, the thymus gradually shrinks and becomes less active, a process known as thymic involution. Disorders of the thymus, such as thymomas or immune deficiencies, can lead to compromised immune function and increase the risk of infections and autoimmune diseases.
