This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the development, scope, and industrial significance of microorganisms in biotechnology, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and related bio-based industries. It discusses the historical evolution of microbial processes from traditional fermentation practices to modern recombinant DNA technology, metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, and advanced microbial production systems. Particular emphasis is placed on the characteristics required<br \/>\nfor industrially useful microorganisms, including genetic stability, high yield and productivity, rapid growth, substrate flexibility, safety, stress tolerance, and suitability for downstream processing. The chapter also describes microbial sourcing, screening, strain preservation, and the importance of master and working cell banks in maintaining genetic consistency. Upstream processing is presented as the foundation of fermentation, encompassing inoculum development, substrate selection, media formulation, and sterilization, while downstream processing includes product detection, separation, recovery, concentration, purification, finishing, and packaging.
