Abstract
Industrial microbiology plays a vital role in the development and large-scale production of valuable products through the controlled use of microorganisms and their metabolic activities. This chapter presents an integrated overview of major principles and practices involved in industrial microbial processes, beginning with the screening and selection of industrially important microorganisms. Primary and secondary screening techniques are discussed for identifying productive strains and evaluating their yield, stability, product characteristics, and suitability for industrial conditions.
Methods of microbial isolation and preservation, including cryopreservation, lyophilization, and master and working cell bank systems, are described for maintaining viable and genetically stable cultures. The chapter further examines industrial sterilization and contamination control, production media and raw materials, and the design and components of fermenters. Batch, fed-batch, and continuous fermentation strategies are compared with respect to productivity, contamination risk, operational complexity, and industrial applications. Major approaches to strain improvement, including mutation, recombinant DNA technology, and protoplast fusion, are also considered. Overall, the chapter emphasizes the integration of microbiology, biotechnology, and biochemical engineering to achieve efficient, economical, reliable, and scalable microbial production processes.
