Biochemistry
Product Description
Biochemistry forms a fundamental component of pharmaceutical education, providing students with an understanding of the chemical basis of life, metabolic processes, enzymatic reactions, and the molecular events underlying health and disease. This book, Biochemistry (Theory), has been prepared for students of B. Pharm. Second Semester and follows the New PCI Syllabus for BP202T. The content has been organized systematically into five units to support progressive and concept-based learning.
The opening unit introduces enzymology, including enzyme properties, nomenclature, classification, coenzymes, and regulation, followed by digestion, absorption, vitamin functions, and important clinical chemistry investigations such as liver function tests, renal function tests, and ELISA. Unit II covers biomolecules, bioenergetics, carbohydrate metabolism, biological oxidation, oxidative phosphorylation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and oxidative stress. Unit III focuses on lipid metabolism and clinically important disorders associated with lipids, including hyperlipidaemias, lipid storage diseases, atherosclerosis, fatty liver disease, and obesity.
Unit IV presents protein structure and function, amino acid metabolism, the urea cycle, nitrogen disposal, amino acid catabolism, neurotransmitters and hormones derived from amino acids, and heme metabolism with related disorders. Unit V addresses nucleotide metabolism, disorders of nucleotide metabolism, purine and pyrimidine biosynthesis, genome structure, the central dogma, genetic code, regulation of protein synthesis, DNA repair, and associated disorders.
The book is intended to provide clear, structured, and academically relevant coverage of essential biochemical concepts. It may serve as a useful resource for classroom learning, revision, examination preparation, and developing a strong foundation for advanced pharmaceutical and biomedical studies, and connecting biochemical concepts with clinical practice.
