Abstract

This module delves into two fundamental aspects of genetics: protein synthesis and genetic patterns of inheritance. Protein synthesis is the process through which cells create proteins, the essential molecules that perform a wide array of functions within organisms. This process involves two critical stages: transcription, where DNA is converted into messenger RNA (mRNA), and translation, where mRNA is used to assemble amino acids into a specific protein. Understanding protein synthesis is key to grasping how genetic information is expressed in living organisms. The module also explores genetic patterns of inheritance, focusing on how traits are passed from one generation to the next. It covers Mendelian inheritance, including dominant and recessive traits, as well as more complex patterns such as incomplete dominance, co-dominance, and polygenic inheritance. By studying these patterns, we gain insight into the predictability and variability of inherited characteristics, providing a foundation for understanding the genetic diversity within populations.
